The Opportunity…

The UK Sports Institute have a role for a part-time Physiology Laboratory Technician working in Manchester.

A snapshot of the role…

This is an exciting opportunity to support practitioners as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. Working 0.3 FTE, you will provide physiology laboratory support in Manchester, helping to ensure laboratory operations run efficiently and to a high standard.

This position offers a high degree of autonomy. As the UKSI's sole technician based at the site, you will take ownership of local laboratory operations, coordinate logistics, maintain equipment and supplies, and build strong working relationships with practitioners, suppliers, administrators, and partner organisations. While support will be available from colleagues across the UKSI network, much of your day-to-day work will require confidence in working independently, managing competing priorities, and solving problems proactively.

We are looking for someone who is organised, practical and reliable, with the confidence to work independently and build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Given the part-time nature of the role, it may be particularly well suited to someone studying or working part-time.

The working pattern is flexible and may be arranged as set days each week or across a more flexible schedule. This is, however, a site-based role providing hands-on laboratory support, and regular attendance at the Manchester site is essential. Given the 0.3 FTE nature of the position, applicants should consider whether they can reliably and sustainably travel to Manchester for their agreed working pattern. Applicants who intend to combine the role with study should ensure that their course commitments are compatible with these requirements.

Could this be you?

  • Do you have the organisational skills to coordinate laboratory logistics for a team of practitioners?
  • Are you comfortable taking ownership of tasks and making decisions independently when required?
  • Can you build and maintain effective relationships with suppliers, administrators, practitioners, and other stakeholders?
  • Can you solve technical laboratory-based problems in a calm and practical manner?

If you are motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution in a high-performance environment and enjoy working with a high level of responsibility and autonomy, we would very much like to hear from you.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At the UKSI we aspire to have a workforce that is diverse and representative of all sections of society, not only by characteristic but by thought and perspective. We believe a diverse workforce enables growth and creates a sustainably inclusive workspace for all employees.

If there is something we can do to help make the recruitment process or the job more accessible, let us know!

Application Method: CV and online application form via the UKSI careers portal

In order to be considered for this opportunity, you will be required to upload a CV and complete an online application form via our website. As part of the application form, you will be required to answer  the following two questions:

  1. In no more than 200 words, describe the laboratory equipment you have experience using and identify the equipment you would currently be confident operating independently. Explain what you have used it for and the extent of your involvement in its setup, calibration, operation, maintenance or troubleshooting.

  1. In no more than 200 words, describe your experience of providing technical support in a sport and exercise physiology laboratory or similar environment. Explain what support you provided, who you supported, and why your contribution was important to the safe and effective operation of the laboratory.
